Sunrise at Deep Creek Lake, MD

Sunrise at Deep Creek Lake
Before moving to Florida, our family used to go on an annual vacation to Deep Creek Lake in Western MD.  This part of Maryland to me has always been one of my favorite places for photography, and good photo spots crop up in even unlikely places.  One year I was driving down US Rte-219 and found a fantastic spot for sunrise photos [map].  If you're traveling south on Rte-219, pass Mayhew in Rd and then look to your left.  You'll see a small road that begins to parallel Rte-219.  From this vantage point, if you look east, you'll be able to see rolling hills (In Florida we'd call these mountains) and a little piece of Deep Creek Lake.

If the stars are aligned properly, though, you can have an added bonus.  One year when I was there, horses were in the field grazing.  These horses helped turn a beautiful sunrise scene into some of my favorite sunrise photos I've ever taken.  Now when I go somewhere to shoot waterfalls, etc. in Western MD, I always check by this spot to see if that magical moment will come again.

  1. Hi Scott, I love your pics... One thing I've noticed is that when you post portrait pictures you tend to make them smaller and put them along side the text. Have you considered making them stand on their own and putting the text in between the shots vertically, rather than along-side? You would need to leave white space on the sides on the blog (otherwise the photo would be just too big), but I feel like the vertical pictures get a little short shrifted :-)

I love the first photo - the balance is super cool with the sun in the upper right and the horse in the lower left. I actually learned a little bit about composition from your post on it a few weeks back and can appreciate a little about why that photo looks so good.

  2. Thanks, Fred. I took your advice and changed the format of this post to center the vertical image. I wanted to save people having to scroll as much, but I think it looks better as you suggested.

  3. Cool, I like it... One of the home improvement site I read publishes all their pictures at a 500x375 size, either vertical or horizontal. I feel like they struck a good balance with that size vertically, because you can still get your head around the entire picture but it's not too much.

As for scrolling, I think that's no problem... I do think there's a need for the vertical pics to not be "too long" and finding a good size for that is tough.

Anyhow, definitely keep up the good work. I really like the site.

  4. Thanks for the complement, as well as the helpful advice. I do like the verticals the same size as the horizontals.
