Least Bittern at Orlando Wetlands Park |
Of all the
herons, egrets and bitterns (Ardeidae), the
Least Bittern is my favorite. They're a challenge to find, since they spend most of their time hidden in reeds, but they are beautiful, small birds, and they are a thrill to see. I frequently see them both in
Viera Wetlands and at
Orlando Wetlands Park. You probably won't find them if you're in a hurry. If you slow down and look carefully in the reeds, there's a good chance you'll see one, or more than one. Here are a sampling of my
gallery of Least Bitterns. Note the juvenile Least Bittern I saw recently at Viera Wetlands.
