White-tailed Deer |
White-tailed Deer in Florida have had a troubled history. Over-hunting in Florida severely depleted the population of deer by the 1930's, and between 1939 and 1941, as many as 10,000 deer were killed in southern Florida in attempt to exterminate the cattle-fever tick. The population of deer in Florida was depleted so severely by the 1940's that Florida had to purchase deer from Wisconsin to replenish Florida's population. My understanding is this decline in deer population in Florida was also a contributing factor to the decline of the Florida Panther.

Conservation efforts for White-tailed Deer in Florida were successful, and their numbers have increased to over 700,000. In my own personal experience, though ,I don't see them nearly as frequently here as I did in Maryland. I suspect that this has to do more with the habitats I visit frequently than with the relative abundance of the species in the state. The pictures in this post all came from Orlando Wetlands Park.

What a pretty little deer! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteDeer are always so sweet to see and photograph. I think it is more than just the "Bambi" affect. I think seeing deer makes us feel connected to the wild, and because they are not a predator, they don't evoke fear in us. Of course, who can resit those eyes! Love the last shot!
