A Freakish Morning in Florida

Yellow-billed Kite?
I woke up this morning and looked out my bedroom window.  Look what was greeting me!  I haven't been able to figure out what this bird is for sure, but I think it's a Yellow-billed Kite!  These birds aren't even supposed to occur in the U.S!

Great Kiskadee
Then on my way out the door, I looked out at the mountains near my house, and I saw an amazing sight.  A Great Kiskadee was perched looking at me!  Unbelievable! These birds are not supposed to be in Florida.  They are supposed to be in Mexico and the southwest U.S!

Speckled Pigeon
Then I drove to work and on the roof of my building was a Speckled Pigeon! These belong in Africa! Something strange is happening here today, and I can't figure it out.  Three extreme rarities in one day!

  1. Where are you now? You're not in central FL if you're seeing mountains. I think you are the bird whisperer. lol

  2. Or maybe birds are just really into April Fools Day. Or you are fooling us. ?

  3. Is today April first? I hadn't noticed :-). You should know that I take my birds very seriously, as well as those famous Florida mountains. I would never use a lame excuse like April Fools day to post some of my early photographs from my travels to Mexico and Ethiopia, taken before I knew much about birds or wildlife photography.

  6. Thanks! I hear that Mt. ReallyNotThere is even taller than Mt. Dora!

  7. If that means I end up with another birding buddy here, then I assure you I'm not fibbing--cross my fingers hope to live.

  8. If you count the mountains in Florida, that would be 4 rarities today. Well, there is Mount Dora! Fun post, Scott!
