Carolina Chickadee

Carolina Chickadee
I rarely gave a second thought to Chickadees when I lived in Maryland.  They are so common, and I'd frequently see them at feeders.  It's funny, though, how sometimes you don't really know what you got until its gone.  They are infrequently found in Central Florida, and in fact, I haven't seen a Chickadee here.  But last week I was in the Baltimore area, and one of the best experiences (other than seeing friends and family again) was seeing Carolina Chickadees at every turn.  Here are a couple photos from this past trip to Maryland.

(this one was very far away but I liked his pose)
I never saw my hometown, until I stayed away too long
I never heard the melody, until I needed a song
Tom Waits, "San Diego Serenade"

Okay, so the lyrics are taken a little out of context, but there you have it.

  1. Interesting post on Chickadees. I never saw them when I lived in Arizona. In Idaho they were regular, but not particularly abundant where I lived. Here in Utah, they seem to be very abundant. Is it even possible to watch a chickadee without cracking a smile?

  2. Thanks, Robert. They are such fun birds to watch. From what I can tell on eBird, I live near the southernmost part of their range. They are seen here, but I noticed that the sightings recorded are usually not where I go birding. That tells me I need to add a few new locations to my usual places. I love eBird!

  3. You picked two of my favorite things - chickadees and sweet gum - to photograph. I can watch those little guys for hours and remember once, on a canoeing/camping trip, laying up (actually lying down) during the hot time of the day and being entertained by a show just like this.
