Great Blue Heron

Great Blue Heron
For me, Great Blue Herons used to be the least attractive of all the Herons, Egrets and Bitterns.  But recently I've begun to see that they actually have many different looks, and I've begun to appreciate them again.  There's even a white morph of the Great Blue Heron that is my favorite.  They can be distinguished from Great Egrets by their larger size, thicker and darker bill, and grey legs, instead of black.  And the behavior of these herons is quite interesting at times as well.  Frequently I see them catch fish that look to be way to large for them, and they take several minutes before they can actually swallow them.  And when they catch snakes, I see them loop the snake around their bill a few times.  So I've renewed my interest in these birds, common as they are.  Here are some of my photos of Great Blue Herons.
